This is a large regional division that deals with a wide variety of adult and pediatric hematologic disorders in both university and community based settings.  The hematopathologists and general pathologists who are members of this division excel in the diagnosis and laboratory monitoring of benign and malignant hematological disorders.  The pathologists working out of the University of Alberta / Stollery Children’s Hospital site also serve as CAP accredited providers of more specialized expertise in the areas of hemostasis, thrombosis, membranopathy investigation, hematologic molecular pathology and flow cytometry.  The regional transfusion service is also an international accredited (AABB and CAP) program with special expertise in product support for perinatal, cardiac surgery, solid organ transplantation, sickle cell anemia and oncology programs.

We are fortunate to participate in the training of medical students and postgraduate trainees in hematopathology, general pathology, clinical hematology (adult and pediatric) and anesthesia; as well as the training of laboratory technology students enrolled in the University of Alberta’s Medical Laboratory Science program.
