This program is designed for students who are looking for in-depth exposure to research during Medical Laboratory Science education. Students spend one summer plus complete six units of course weight in a research course offered by the Division. Successful students receive recognition on their transcripts and degrees through the notation, 'With Honors in Research.'
Objectives
To encourage awareness of the importance of basic and clinical biomedical research to students interested in pursuing an advanced research degree upon graduation and to students wishing to seek employment as research technologists.
Who qualifies?
The program is open to all students registered in Medical Laboratory Science at the University of Alberta.
How to apply:
Inform the Director, Division of Medical Laboratory Science, of your intention to pursue the 'Honors in Research' designation, and arrange a brief consultation meeting with the Director of Undergraduate Research Programs.
Summary of requirements
One full summer of research
a 6-credit research course (INTD 491)
a minimum G.P.A. of 3.5
a research supervisor willing to sponsor your project
a proposal, a final report, and an oral presentation
What's at the end of the program?
Students who successfully complete this program will have the notation 'With Honors in Research' on their transcripts and B.Sc. MLS degrees.
What does Honors in Research offer you?
The Honors in Research designation will formally recognize your academic training in the area of research.
Active participation in a good research project will improve your lateral thinking skills and clarity of reasoning.
The program will allow you to assess your interest in research and may provide you with the stimulus to enter a graduate program, leading to the M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree.
